abyss series

to die in order to bloom and grow.

This series began inadvertently in 2016. While in Berlin making a piece where I worked using the image of intestines as a base, my grandmother unexpectedly died in Rio of complications after having had a procedure in her own intestines. This period crystallised a series of losses and a deep feeling of being disconnected.

My relationship with my work was changing and this series marks the transition from only working for myself to working more comfortably with commissions. In 2018, 4 images were commissioned by the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam for the Garden Broadcasts as part of the Dissident Gardens programme, one of which later became a mural in said exhibition. In 2019, an image was commissioned by ArtBio for a campaign raising Alzheimer’s awareness.
